Italian cyclist Sonny Colbrelli, who won Paris-Roubaix in 2021, collapsed in March 2022 after the finish of what now appears to be his last race. He crossed the finish line of the Tour of Catalonia to Sant Feliu de Guíxols in second place and immediately suffered cardiac arrest. After successful resuscitation, he was admitted to the hospital in Girona. There, the cause was quickly identified: cardiac arrhythmias.
Forced career stop due to regulations
The heart problems are now under control thanks to an ICD (Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator) and Colbrelli says he is feeling well. He was determined to return to the professional cycling peloton, but regulations are standing in his way. In Italy, professional sports with an ICD are forbidden.
