What should you consider when buying an AED?

When purchasing an AED, the goal is simple: to ensure that bystanders in distress can act immediately to save a life. Besides choosing the right AED, accessories – such as an AED cabinet – are equally important for a rapid deployment in case of cardiac arrest.

We are happy to advise you on the best choices for your situation, the necessary accessories, and the maintenance of your AED

Checklist: Which AED is suitable for my situation?

There are many different AEDs for sale. The right choice depends on your situation:

  • The location: Do you place the AED inside or outside? This determines, among other things, whether you need an indoor or outdoor cabinet. Please note: In Belgium, a sealed wall cabinet is required when installing a public AED.
  • IP value: Do you place the AED in a humid or dusty environment? This determines the required IP rating.
  • Resuscitation feedback: Should the device support the rescuer with spoken instructions on the depth and speed of chest compressions (‘press harder!’)? If so, choose an AED with direct resuscitation feedback.
  • Environmental factors: Is there a lot of noise? Then choose a model with a loud volume or visual screen instructions.
  • Language: Is a multilingual AED needed for an international work environment?
  • Target audience: Will the AED be placed in a location with many children (such as a school)? If so, check if it has a child mode or child electrodes.

Essential AED accessories and maintenance

Buying an AED is step one, but a complete package ensures safety. Therefore, don't forget the following:

  • AED cabinet & signage: For optimal visibility and protection (e.g., an outdoor cabinet with heating).
  • Battery & electrodes: Keep a close eye on the expiration date; they must be replaced periodically and after each use.
  • Service & Maintenance: Choose a service subscription so the AED is always ready for use.
  • Rescue Kit: Tools such as scissors, a resuscitation mask and a razor blade.
  • Training: A resuscitation course ensures that bystanders dare to act in emergencies.
