European School Mol: Heart Safety as a Priority

The European School in Mol was founded in 1960 as the third European school in Europe. The school welcomes both local students and children from foreign families living and working in Belgium or the Netherlands.

The campus includes three departments:

  • Kindergarten (3–6 years)
  • Primary school (Ages 6–11)
  • High school (11-18 years old)

With over 50 nationalities, 780 pupils, and 130 staff members, the school is a vibrant international community. Pupils obtain the European Baccalaureate there, which allows them to continue their studies or work throughout Europe, usually in three or even four languages.
The school in Mol is one of five Type I European Schools in Belgium (four of which are in Brussels), which are fully subsidized. In total, there are 30 European Schools spread across Europe.

Safety and Health at School
Within the European School Mol Jeroen Jannis, as Safety & Security Officer (internal prevention advisor), responsible for the policy on safety, security, and health for both students and employees.

Implementation of AEDs
About eight to ten years ago, the school decided to place an AED in each building on campus. After extensive research, the school approached AED-Partner. They chose the Cardiac Science Powerheart G5, primarily because of its multilingual functionality, a crucial feature within the internationally composed school community.
11 AEDs were purchased, along with corresponding service contracts to ensure the devices are always well maintained and operational.

Safety-conscious School
The European School Mol places great importance on heart safety. In Primary School, students are introduced to resuscitation and its importance. In Secondary School, this is further explored through training and further education.

This structural focus on life-saving skills earned the school the “Heart-Safe School Badge,” awarded by the Red Cross Flanders. “A wonderful recognition that we are proud of!”
