Do you know how to recognize cardiac arrest*? On television and in movies, we often see victims clutching their chest or collapsing. Two well-known signs! However, there are also other, less known signs that indicate cardiac arrest. Make sure you know them all and save someone's life when every second counts!

In common parlance, people often speak of a ‘cardiac arrest’. Officially, it is referred to as circulatory arrest, because the heart is still beating (chaotically), but is no longer pumping blood.

1. Suddenly collapsing
   In case of cardiac arrest, the victim collapses out of nowhere.
   
   
2. Unconscious and not responding
   The victim does not respond when you address him or her. Physical stimuli, such as shaking the shoulders, also do not help.
   
   
3. Shocking movements
   In the event of cardiac arrest, the victim's arms and legs may sometimes make jerky movements. This lasts for approximately 10 to 20 seconds and is caused by a lack of oxygen to the brain.
   
   
4. No or abnormal breathing
   Many victims of cardiac arrest do not breathe. There are also victims who gasp for air, snore, or seem to breathe heavily or with difficulty. This lasts about 10 to 30 seconds. This is called ‘agonal breathing’.

Pressure in the chest, stomach, or back
Some victims complain of chest pain or pressure just before they fall to the ground. Sometimes they grab their chest. 

Symptoms in women
Let op: Bij vrouwen uiten de symptomen van een hartstilstand zich vaak anders. Zij ervaren bijvoorbeeld pijn in de bovenbuik (maagstreek), de kaak of specifiek tussen de schouderbladen.

Do you recognize these symptoms? If so, don't hesitate and call 112 immediately!

Without help, a victim cannot survive a cardiac arrest. By recognizing the signs immediately, you gain precious minutes. Therefore, fast help from bystanders is one of the most important factors for a good outcome.
