In standby mode (when the AED is hanging unused on the wall), most AED batteries last 4 to 5 years. However, there are significant differences between brands. For example, some ZOLL or Physio-Control batteries last up to 5 years, while certain types from Philips or Defibtech have a lifespan of 4 or even 7 years.

Several factors influence this deadline:

• Self-tests Each AED performs automatic checks daily or weekly. This consumes a small amount of power.
• Temperature: Extreme cold or heat shortens the lifespan. An AED in an outdoor cabinet often needs a new battery faster than a device that hangs indoors.
• Stand-by versus use The mentioned years only apply to standby use. As soon as the AED is used to deliver a shock, this consumes a significant portion of its capacity.

Sometimes you can't wait for the expiration date. To ensure reliability, we recommend taking immediate action in the following situations:

1. After using the AED: Has the AED been connected to a victim? If so, always check the battery (and electrodes). You want to be sure there is enough energy for a next deployment.
2. On low battery state: The AED indicates this itself via an indicator. As soon as this signal appears, there is often only capacity for a limited number of shocks left.
3. On beep or error signal: Do you hear the AED beeping? This is an alarm signal that the self-test has failed. This could be due to a nearly empty battery.
4. After the expiration date: A date is often shown on the battery. Depending on the brand, this could be an expiration date, an 'install by' date, or a production date. So, pay close attention to this when replacing the battery.
5. At extreme temperatures: Has the AED been exposed to frost or temperatures above 50 degrees? Check the status extra carefully or proactively replace the battery.

You can recognize a nearly empty battery in the following ways:

• Status indicator Most devices have a light that flashes green (‘AED ready for use’) and turns red (or stops flashing) if the AED is malfunctioning.
• Acoustic signal The AED gives short, repeating beeps to attract attention.
• Display message: Devices with a screen often show text or a battery icon indicating low voltage.

The Dutch Resuscitation Council (NRR) advises to regularly visually check the status indicator so you are not surprised by a dead battery during an emergency.
