In the Netherlands and Belgium, 27,000 people experience sudden cardiac arrest every year. This also happens on the football field, in the sports canteen, or along the sidelines. In such a situation, prompt assistance is vital. The sooner resuscitation (including AED) is started, the greater the victim's chance of survival!
It is therefore of vital importance that every sports club and sports association has a working AED. In Flanders, this is even the case for football clubs mandated. Are you looking for an AED for your sports club? Then check out 3 handy tips below that will help you with your choice.
When purchasing an AED, you can pay attention to the following 3 points, among others:
Fully automatic AED
In public spaces such as a sports canteen or football field, the resuscitation experience of (potential) rescuers varies greatly. It is therefore wise to opt for a fully automatic AED. After detecting a shockable heart rhythm, a fully automatic AED can administer an electric shock to the victim completely automatically. This is in contrast to semi-automatic AEDs, where the rescuer must press the shock button themselves.
The great advantage of a fully automatic defibrillator is that any delay due to 'hesitation' by the rescuer is prevented. And that saves lives: every second counts in the event of cardiac arrest!
2. Multilingual AED
To be able to provide quick assistance, it is important that a caregiver can understand and/or read the AED instructions. In a multicultural environment, a multilingual AED is therefore a good choice. There are bilingual, trilingual, and even quadrilingual AEDs on the market. With these AEDs, you can easily switch languages during a deployment.
3. Check: children's electrodes or child buttons?
In the case of cardiac arrest, you typically think mainly of adult victims. However, in the Netherlands and Belgium, a number of young athletes also experience cardiac arrest every year. Therefore, always check the capabilities of the AED for defibrillation in children up to 8 years old and/or weighing 25 kg.
This means that for some AEDs, child electrodes need to be ordered separately. There are also AEDs with a child button or child key, with which the rescuer can activate a special child protocol in the AED. Among other things, this protocol ensures that the AED delivers a less strong shock to the child.
